The irrational use of antibiotics in breeding and the illegal addition of antibiotics to feed pose severe threats to food safety in China. Growing consumer demand for antibiotic-free products and mounting calls within the industry for relevant certification standards have driven the formulation of certification specifications for antibiotic-free products in China.

Antibiotic-free Breeding

An agricultural production method that complies with specific breeding principles. During animal production, antibiotics or chemically synthesized veterinary drugs shall not be used for non-therapeutic purposes such as growth promotion, disease prevention and health care. When targeted treatment is required for sick animals, the varieties, dosages, treatment courses and withdrawal periods of antibiotics or chemically synthesized veterinary drugs shall be strictly controlled. Animals are fed with antibiotic-free feed throughout the breeding cycle.
